This project includes construction of a new 8-story control tower including office space, training areas, a break room, equipment rooms, and the control cab. The original tower was built in the 1940s and no longer met fire, safety and security standards.

Construction includes demolition, concrete foundations, pre-cast concrete panel exterior, a glass and metal panel tower control cab (upper) enclosure, as well as site work and fit-out. Part of the contract is the removal and clearing of approximately 22 acres of trees and brush to improve the sightlines to the runways for the new tower. Provisions and infrastructure will be incorporated for new Air National Guard, National Weather Service and airport communications, antennas, and weather equipment. The existing Air Traffic Control Tower will be demolished and removed once the new facility is fully commissioned.

The Lincoln Hall Building 607 renovation modernizes a 1909 historic structure on the grounds of the United States Military Academy, a designated National Historic Landmark. The building’s last significant renovation took place in 1987 when it was converted from Bachelor Officer’s Quarters to its current use as a General Instruction Building.

This project includes structural modifications, full interior demolition, and fit-out across the four stories and a basement. Updated office spaces, conference rooms, workstations, and support areas will be added to Lincoln Hall Building 607 as well.

Exterior enhancements include restoration of the 100+ year old façade, including new windows and doors. The existing building will be repurposed to house the Directorate for Admissions, the USMA Staff Judge Advocate, Audio, Visual, and Media support, and the Cadet Store.

This project consisted of the construction of the 2-story, 35,000-square-foot NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Marine Resource Headquarters Building, including a 3,700-square-foot Maintenance Building (Pole Bam) on the property of the Nissequouge State Park in Kings Park, NY. The project site is approximately 7 acres.

The new headquarters operates the state’s only U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-certified shellfish microbiology laboratory to ensure that the more than one million acres of shellfish growing areas throughout New York’s marine waters meet the stringent requirements of the National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP). The lab must complete FDA-approved proficiency testing twice per year to maintain its FDA certification and is evaluated by the FDA every three years for NSSP compliance and recertification.

This project received the ASCE 2022 Project of the Year Building Award. It was also recognized as Top Government Project at the 2022 Long Island Business News Real Estate, Architecture & Engineering Awards.

The two landings on either side of the new Tappan Zee Bridge offer visitors access to the bike/walking path for pedestrians to enter the bridge and explore the six overlooks along their way. Each landing is unique in its design.

Both the Westchester and Rockland Landings are located less than a mile from the nearest downtown areas on their respective side. The Landings features a welcome center, outdoor pavilion, interactive displays, and public art. Restrooms are located in each welcome center, which also includes an interactive kiosk to learn more about local restaurants and attractions.

To accentuate the new landings, New York State Thruway Authority partnered with ArtsWestchester and the Arts Council of Rockland to commission artwork across the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge Path. The Public Art program includes five sculptures, four bicycle racks, and a mural, all by New York artists.

The pedestrian paths and scenic overlooks are open to the public.

The new Tappan Zee Bridge has been designed for current commuters and future generations. The new bridge is a visually striking, recognizable landmark, and one of the widest cable-stayed structures of its kind in the world. It includes eight general traffic lanes, four breakdown/emergency lanes, a bike and pedestrian path, and state-of-the-art traffic monitoring systems as well as space for dedicated bus lanes from the day the bridge is fully opened. Designed and constructed to be mass-transit ready, the new crossing accommodates bus rapid transit, light rail, or commuter rail.

The construction of six new belvederes, or scenic overlooks, that are part of the new bridge’s shared bike and pedestrian path bring much-needed outdoor social space to the Lower Hudson Valley. These resting points reflect the culture and history of the area and provide a new connection for non-motorized transport in the region, offering an exciting recreational opportunity that doesn’t currently exist in Rockland or Westchester counties.

The belvederes each have a unique theme and name—Fish and Ships, Painter’s Point, River Crossing, Half Moon, Tides of Tarrytown, and Palisades—illustrated by different design concepts, which required the construction of one-of-a-kind sculpted seating areas of stainless steel, glass, granite and wood. EW Howell worked with specialty engineers and the project architect, HDR, to develop final designs for the glass parapet enclosure, to provide unobstructed views from each belvedere. This was a challenge due to the strict tolerances of the bridge, wind load requirements, and bridge deck curved contour profiles.

This 318,000-square-foot Yaphank Correctional Facility project includes the main building, male detention center, and an administrative building. Built next to the existing facility, the main building is a one-story structural steel and masonry building and includes areas for booking, visitation, female housing, healthcare, and mechanical rooms. The male detention center is a 2-story structural steel building, consisting of pre-fabricated concrete cells with a capacity to hold 360 prisoners. The administrative building consists of an interior fit-out of the existing structure on the site. All 3 buildings on the site have slab-on-grade foundations.

Work began on the facility in January 2009 and concluded in March 2012. EW Howell Construction Group’s Project Manager on the project was responsible for overseeing operational aspects of the field and office teams, ensuring project compliance with company policies, providing schedule updates, keeping the project on track with schedule milestones, and monitoring the project’s final considerations.

The Yaphank Correctional Facility required approximately 500,000 square feet of masonry, coupled with mortar, rebar, backup block in some areas and three-course-thick security walls in certain sections. In corrections projects, security-focused features are part of the territory. It was vital that EW Howell worked with the corrections officers to understand their needs and how the finished facility had to operate.

One of the facility’s most interesting features is its direct-supervision security system. With state-of-the-art security equipment, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office can effectively monitor and control the inmate population with minimal staff.

Designed by Wiedersum Associates Architects, this $130 million project is the largest in size and scope for Suffolk County since the 1970s.
