Jones Beach Amphitheater

Jones Beach Theater was constructed in 1952 as part of the master plan for the Jones Beach State Park. In 1992, the theatre underwent an extensive renovation, adding a second level and increasing the capacity. Three more renovations have been undertaken since then.

A new Art-Deco inspired renovation began in October 2023 and features new VIP and General Admission entrances, an enlarged plaza with new bar and concession areas, renovated VIP Area with a new boardwalk and waterfront seating, new premium seating,
upgraded box suites, renovation of plaza concourse with new bathrooms and concession areas, back of house improvements, site improvements, and electrical, mechanical & structural upgrades.

The renovation project was phased throughout two concert seasons, with careful consideration to not disrupt the concertgoer’s experience. This design-build-assist effort required teamwork to move through design and resolve challenges quickly. This effort of EW Howell, subcontractor teams, and the Owner exemplified a culture of ‘solutions only’ to advance the progress of the project.

The Jones Beach Theater project received the 2024 Jeffrey J. Zogg Build New York Award from AGC New York State. Additionally, the project was was recognized by Long Island Business News’ 2025 Real Estate, Architecture & Engineering Awards in the Top Renovation/Reuse/Redevelopment Projects category.

1 Hotel Central Park, 18th Floor Renovation

This 1 Hotel Central Park project saw the 6,000-square-foot renovation of an existing penthouse, which was originally dentist office space, on the top of the building.

EW Howell Construction Group used the existing floor below for staging, running plumbing, electrical, and additional structural steel to support the additional loads for the new rooms above.

Five penthouse rooms were built, furnished with reclaimed wood for millwork (ceilings, closets, credenza, kitchen cabinets, vanities, tables), stone counters, wood floors, new full-height windows, and doors leading to the terrace.

Aspects of the 1 Hotel Central Park project included full demo, new electrical power, lighting/controls, and fire alarm, new HVAC units and controls, new plumbing and fixtures, wood and carpet floors, full-height windows and doors along most of the exterior, Portola paint, new parapet railings, opened slab & extension of existing stairs on 1 floor, an extended elevator and machine room shaft on 1 floor, new parapet paver, wood, and tile, stucco and EFIS, gutters and roofing, an extended existing line chute, metal panel sound barriers at the mechanical catwalk, and a new room on the existing terrace.

Rye Playland

Initially constructed in 1928, Playland is a New York landmark and continues attracting families, groups, and avid park-goers.

In mid-2023, Phase 1 of the multi-phase Rye Playland project was completed. This phase included landscaping, ride work, the fountain, and the retail store. Phase 2 of the project wrapped up during the summer.

Renovation was done on the fountain, including new pump system equipment, waterproofing, and precast, as well as the mall planting, including removal of existing trees in favor of an all-new landscape. Gift shop fit-out was done, as well as demolition and new construction on a side car ride project.

Rye Playland officially opened on May 20 for its 95th Opening Day of the 2023 season; it operated only on weekends for the first few weeks.

TWA Hotel Fitness Center

The TWA Flight Center was originally opened in 1962 at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The terminal closed in 2001 and, nearly two decades later, reopened as the TWA Hotel and included original details from the 1960s terminal. In 2019, EW Howell Construction Group completed the TWA Hotel Fitness Center. The space is 10,000 square feet and features futuristic equipment.

This project included the renovation of the new TWA Hotel’s Fitness Center. The new 10,000-square-foot fitness center features futuristic and best-of-the-past equipment such as sandbags, kettlebells, battle ropes, TEX and condition machines, as well as 14 Peloton bikes. Also included in the fitness center are locker rooms with 8 showers, and fully-stocked salon-style vanities.

Working on this project was a unique experience in terms of its prestige as well as the logistical and timing challenges that come with an active project site with many moving parts. EW Howell managed coordination of the design team, gym equipment design team, and other vendors and contractors to ensure the delivery of this project, which stand as a preservation of an iconic piece of New York history.

Blue Point Brewery

EW Howell Construction Group was selected by Anheuser-Busch InBev to complete construction services for the new home of the Blue Point Brewery located at 225 West Main Street in Patchogue, NY. EW Howell completed construction of the brewing manufacturing facility as well as construction of the tap room.

Located on the site of the former Briarcliffe College in downtown Patchogue, the new brewery and headquarters replace the former location on River Avenue, which served the company for the past 20 years. The new 68,000-square-foot, 2-story brewery has dramatically increased the local company’s brewing capabilities while still leaving room for further expansion. The total space is about five times larger than at River Avenue, with the second floor and parts of the consumer entrance dedicated to the tasting room.

The size of the Blue Point Brewery building allowed a significant project program that included Blue Point’s administrative headquarters, beer production and distribution, a brewer’s lab, a private tasting room, and a restaurant. The restaurant is located on the mezzanine above the brewery and office functions.

To accomplish this, EW Howell removed roughly 75 percent of the former college’s second floor to make room for grain milling, rows of towering fermentation tanks, and its canning and bottling packaging system.

Blue Point Brewing Company was established in 1998 as one of Long Island, New York’s first craft breweries. After nearly two decades in its original location, a cluster of small marina warehouses in the village of Patchogue, they had outgrown the space and needed to relocate.

Tommy Bahama, Flagship Store

Tommy Bahama, the popular lifestyle brand, opened their NYC flagship store on Fifth Avenue stretch between Rockefeller Center and the New York Public Library in December 2012.

This project includes 5,000 square feet of men’s, women’s and home decor retail space, 1,300 square feet for the Marlin Bar, and 6,700 square feet of space on the second floor for the Tommy Bahama Restaurant and Bar.

This vacation-esque “lifestyle” concept takes up two levels of the historical Fred F. French building on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 45th Street. What makes this 13,000-square-foot store unique is that it is a hybrid restaurant/retail store. The new store carries the upscale lifestyle brand’s collection of men’s and women’s sportswear, swimwear, and accessories, as well as select home décor items. Out of the 90-plus Tommy Bahamas located around the country, only 13 of them feature this food and beverage component.

The Waldorf-Astoria, La Chine Restaurant

This project includes a 4,000 square-foot restaurant renovation for La Chine, a regional Chinese restaurant located in the historic Waldorf Astoria, and was completed in an impressive 8 weeks.

The chic restaurant features an abundance of specialty dishes from all over China with a unique French twist, as well as a seafood raw bar unlike any other. Unique design elements for La Chine in the Waldorf Astoria include black and gold high gloss lacquer panels, custom hand-painted wallpaper and murals, custom chandeliers, light fixtures, and laser-cut metal screens.

The New York Botanical Garden, Stephen Starr Hudson Garden Grill

Opening in April 2005, the Stephen Starr Hudson Garden Grill sits in the heart of The New York Botanical Garden and serves as the Garden’s first full-service establishment. This restaurant spotlights the innovative flavors of New American cuisine as inspired by locally sourced, ethically produced ingredients from Hudson Valley farms and other regional producers.

The space offers beautiful views of the Garden with plenty of outdoor seating. With architecture by Bentel & Bentel, the space features low banquet seating, an expansive walnut-topped bar, and an open kitchen designed for exhibition cooking.

The Waldorf-Astoria is the historic Manhattan hotel located at 301 Park Avenue. EW Howell Construction Group has worked with the Waldorf-Astoria on the following projects:

China Room Demo – 600 square feet of demolition and concrete work
Peacock Alley Dishwasher – 700-square-foot renovation/upgrade the existing dishwashing machine
Empire Ballroom – Renovation/upgrade to the existing 3,000-square-foot Empire Ballroom with new finishes

Kaufman Astoria Studios

Kaufman Astoria Studios is New York’s premier film and television production complex and is the home of PBS’s Sesame Street, as well as numerous independent films and smaller projects.

Stage K

In March 2010, EW Howell Construction Group completed construction of Stage K, a new production studio located at 37th Street in Astoria, NY. The new building’s total area is approximately 40,000 square feet and consists of an 18,000-square-foot production studio with an estimated 22,000 square feet for office space. Stage K includes dressing rooms, green rooms, wardrobe and makeup rooms, and production offices.

EW Howell ensured that the client’s acoustical needs were met or exceeded. Though specified by design consultants, EW Howell had to coordinate multiple components such as HVAC systems, rolling concrete doors, floor and wall systems, and electrical systems, among others, to create a unified and acoustically sound working stage.

Cat Walk / Guard Booth

In 2013, EW Howell constructed a new guard booth and catwalk at the main entrance of Kaufman Astoria Studios. The project also included new fences and gates.

The Kaufman Astoria Studios project was was recognized by the Queens Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s 98th Annual Building Awards.
