The Mount Sinai South Nassau Communities Hospital Central Utility Plant (CUP) / Emergency/Normal Infrastructure (ENI) Project consists of a new 23,000-square-foot, 2-story building to replace the existing CUP building, serving the Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital campus. This new critical facility provides critical healthcare services without interruption, during and after a storm event, with redundant power and increased capacity electrical emergency generators. It includes a new chilled water plant featuring 3 new ultra-high efficiency variable speed chillers (plus 1 relocated from the existing plant), 4 new cooling towers, variable speed pumps, and a water treatment system.

Chilled water is provided to the hospital through underground double-walled piping connecting to their existing utility tunnel. The steam plant features a SCADA system, 3 new steam boilers, 3 underground 35,000-gallon fuel oil storage tanks, and transfer systems, a deaerator with boiler feed water pumps, a surge tank, and condensate transfer pumps. Within the CUP is a facility control room with SCADA and BMS workstations. Two new passenger elevators will serve a future parking garage connected to the CUP lobbies. Electrical system upgrades include 2 new 3900kW emergency generators with load bank, 3 new 5kV utility switchgear, normal substation, paralleling gear, transformers, redundant battery rooms, and 3 capacitor banks. The ENI portion of the project replaces the existing electrical switch yard with 2 new prefabricated buildings containing normal and emergency double-ended substations, and a separate ATS building.

This project is to provide a resilient structure to protect against stormwater, flooding, and wind. It will provide redundant systems that are highly efficient and resistant to flooding.

The MSSN Central Utility Plant is an ACEC New York Engineering Award winning project, having received a Platinum Award for Building/Technology Systems. It was also recognized at the Long Island Business News 2021 Real Estate, Architecture & Engineering Awards in the Top Commercial Construction Project category.

EW Howell Construction Group is the Construction Manager for the new Ambulatory Surgery and Multi-Specialty Ambulatory Care Center project located on Main Street in Patchogue Village, which was previously the home of various retailers, including Burlington Coat Factory.

The new reuse of the space includes removing the roof structure and mechanical penthouse and constructing new side walls and a roof structure for the new 2-story design, each floor with approximately 27,000 square feet, with ceiling heights of 12 feet on the first floor and 9 feet on the second floor.

The Patchogue Ambulatory project requires new structural work that meets the unique structural and MEP vibration criteria for Article 28 ambulatory surgery programs by any AHJ with jurisdiction. The new foundation work, underpinning, etc., for new footings and elevator pits must also meet these requirements. The north and sound elevations will receive new faces and improvements at the exterior walkways at the building’s front and rear lot lines.

This project is another prime example of the reuse of an existing space in the heart of a downtown district.

The Patchogue Ambulatory project was featured in New York Real Estate Journal’s Developing Long Island Spotlight for 2026.

Northwell Health Plainview Hospital is a 3-phase façade renovation project. The first two phases required removing and replacing the existing façade with a metal panel system. While the exterior work was performed, we provided a permanent/temporary wall to separate the existing hospital spaces (ICU, Telemetry, Physical Therapy, and support offices). The removal and replacement of the façade was phased to minimize the impact on the hospital’s operations.

The final phase of the project includes a new two-story Bendheim Glass enclosed vestibule and reconstruction of the dining café, which will enhance the main entrance to the hospital.

EW Howell Construction Group has been at the forefront of several Staten Island University Hospital projects for Northwell Health including:

Power Plant/Overbuild

The new Power Plant building is to be constructed on the area adjacent to the existing loading dock/receiving area of the hospital. It will contain two new emergency electrical generators, associated switch gear and transmission lines, three new boilers for heat and hot water, associated steam piping for transmission, and water treatment equipment for the boiler plant. There will also be three new chillers and a cooling tower to produce chilled water for the hospital’s HVAC systems.

The two-story overbuild addition (Core and Shell) will be stationed above the power plant and loading dock of the facility.

The Labor and Delivery Modernization portion of work will include a new entry lobby and stair tower that will tie back into the existing hospital and be tailored to Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, and new expanded NICU.

Scope: Addition, Renovation | Size: 90,000 SF

EM Feeder

The EM Feeder project features the replacement of the emergency power supply to vital buildings of the hospital; the emergency department/educational center and the Heart Tower. This project requires the installation of approximately 20 miles mineral insulated (MI) copper conductors across the campus, over new steel utility bridges, and across the campus’ roof to reach the equipment to be served by the generators.

Normal Power & Temp Feeds

This project is an upgrade of the three main electrical services feeding the main building. It is being completed by strengthening the existing concrete deck, construction of new normal and emergency electrical spaces with temperature control, and installation of new primary, secondary, and emergency distribution switchboards.

Scope: Renovation

Hazard Mitigation

The Hazard Mitigation infrastructure upgrade provides redundancy to the hospital’s critical infrastructure to include a new generator, a new electric chiller, chilled water circulation and condenser pumps, new automatic transfer switches, new emergency distribution switchboards, and a new high efficiency boiler.  The project is nearing completion, with successful integration and commissioning of the emergency electrical systems as well as the chilled water systems.  The boiler has recently successfully completed the high fire output testing for DEP approvals and we are in the final phases to formal turnover of the boiler for permanent operation.

Scope: Renovation | Size: 7,500 SF
